Deciding Who Inherits What
- Your Wills Team

This is the heart of most Wills – deciding where your assets go.
Questions to think about:
Who are your main beneficiaries?
Do you want to leave specific items to particular people? Perhaps sentimental jewellery,
or a particular painting.
Should children inherit equally or differently?
Do you want to leave money to friends, charities, or causes you care about?
What happens if a beneficiary dies before you?
Don’t forget digital assets – online accounts, photographs, domain names, or online
businesses.
Specific gifts vs. residuary estate
You can leave:
Specific gifts (items, sums of money)
Residuary estate (what’s left after debts, taxes, and specific gifts)
Example:
“I leave £5,000 to my niece Sarah” (specific gift) and “the rest of my estate to my two
children equally” (residuary gift).
Avoiding disputes
Clear instructions reduce the risk of arguments. Be specific about descriptions and full
names.
