Appointing Guardians for Children
- Your Wills Team

If you have children under 18, or who will need lifelong care, your Will is where you name
who should raise or care for them if you die before they can care for themselves.
Questions to think about:
Who shares your values and parenting style?
Are they willing and financially able?
Do they live in a location you’re happy with?
Do you want a back-up guardian?
Financial arrangements
You can set up a trust to make sure funds are available for your children’s upbringing.
Those trusts are generally an ‘education and maintenance’ trust, and might give a discretion
for the guardian and trustees to buy a house for your children to live in, or give them similar
powers.
Discuss with potential guardians
Make sure they understand the role and agree to take it on.
Your Wills Team can help ensure your Will appoints guardians clearly, avoiding uncertainty
in difficult times.
